Golf Grip
Question
I am a right handed golfer and employ a strong grip with both hands, as I've learned through the years that I hit it farther this way, and my misses tend to be hooks which go farther. My USGA index is currently 10.9. I struggle with consistency, I think because I can't seem to get consistent with two things--my set up position, and my release. My questions are: 1) what should be the ball position for someone who plays a strong grip? My "default" ball position is inside left heel for driver, 9 iron in about the middle, everything else in between, but I am often moving it back or forward if I stop making good contact, etc. Should a strong grip have the ball in a conventional spot, forward, or back? 2) What should the release feel like with a strong grip? I grip strong but cup the left wrist at the top to create a square face at the top. To hit it straight, I have to feel like I have "knuckles up" through impact. The trouble is, it seems like if I hold that position into the follow through (producing a bit of a chicken wing follow through), I have a tendency to push/block it, and if I let the hands roll over, I can hit snap hooks. How should the release feel for a strong grip?
Thanks.
Answer
hello JP and thank you for your question. the ball position is same for everyone but your way of deciding the ball position is old and outdated. EVERY single club except putter and wedge is same. my point is. if you are wearing a nike polo shirt, you probably have a nike logo on your left chest. the ball should be right below that logo. if you are hitting your driver, widen your stance. if you have 6 iron, shorten your stance. do you see what i am saying? that way, you don't move the ball postion but you adjust your body to the ball. its a way that solid players do on the tour. some include luke donald, tiger woods and vijay singh. i know for a fact that they use this way to determine their ball positon. if you feel like you have to have your knuckles up when you release, then that is fine. but ELIMINATE your chicken wing through. that is a killer as it can cost you not only accuracy but distance. work on extending your arms after the impact. good way to think about this is "shake hands with the target" get that thought into your head and practice that way and you will have a better release. you may feel that it is a little strange, but i can assure you that this is the right way. i hope i was able to help... let me know if you have further questions and good luck!!
