Drop Kick Drives

Question
It seems the only way I can keep my ball in the fairway is to drop kick all my drives. If I make contact with the ball first the outcome is usually a horrific slice, and when I compensate for that i will hit the ball straight as an arrow DEAD LEFT. Now I have always been able to hit the ball 225-250 yards and hit more than my share of fairways via the drop kick, but as I get older this is becoming increasingly more difficult. My trajectory is also the same as one should hit a 9 iron, so windy days are nightmares. I do not have this problem in the least with my irons, or even 3 or 5 woods from the fairway. I have always been of the belief that if ain't broke, don't fix it. In fact I even went so far as to take a lesson, the instructor watched me hit ten drop kick drives straight down the middle that traveled my normal distance, he said "if thats a problem I am in the wrong business", ten years have passed and now I am unable to produce the same distance results with my swing. Any suggestions besides take two weeks off then quit?

Answer
hello scott and i am TERRIBLY sorry for the delay of this message.  i am eager to help you so lets get started.
lets face some obvious facts first as this will help us get started.
1.  you are having a driver problem
2.  your swing feels a little shaky
3.  you are not sure how the ball will fly once you hit the ball

golf swing involves so much movement that one little flaw in the swing can make the difference of a 250 yd drive and 225 yd drive.  if you are hitting your drives as high as you hit your 9 iron, then thats a sign that you should start fixing your swing.  mainly by fundamentals and basics.  check the postion of the ball and check your grip.  one of the main problems when hitting the ball so high is having an out-to-in swing.  meaning you are TRYING to hit the ball rather than swing.  you see, golf swing should be effortless, with ease and tension-free.  if you TRYING to hit a straight and a long shot, it just doesn't work that way.  rather try to make a swing that you can depend on to hit straight and far without effort.
1.  swing smoothly and slow down your tempo considerably
2.  SHALLOW OUT your swing PATH.  imagine you are playing baseball and you are trying to hit the ball to the first base.  you should feel like you are swing from inside-to-outside.  this fixing of the swing requires a long time and a commitement.  try bending down on your knees and hitting the ball that way.  do this several times for you to get the feel of a shallow swing.  if you are doing this, then you are swing AROUND your body.
3.  DON'T try to hit the ball, rather start thinking that you should make a good swing.  its not tennis or baseball that you are trying to hit a moving ball.  the golf ball isn't going to go anywhere unless you hit it. YOU have the control of the ball and to control it, you have to control your swing.  get that thought in your head and start thinking a little differently about your swing.
4.  don't shift your body out of line on the impact postion.  when you are hitting the ball, one reason you are slicing the ball is because you are pushing the left side of your body out of the line.  imagine there is a wall that prevents you to move toward the left side when you are hitting the ball.  rather, try rotating and put pressure on the right side of your left foot.

5.  DON'T quit.  golf has a funny way with golfers.  one day, you will feel like you are hitting the best ball of your life and the next day, you will feel completely different.  you have to acknowledge that you are going through a "phase"  and that no matter how long your phase is, its going to go away eventually.

hope i was able to help.  please let me know if you have further questions and i will do my best to answer as quickly as possible.
