Hitting the Driver off the tee
Question
I am a beginning golfer. I have taken lessons and was doing okay off the tee. I have since lost my ability to produce any kind of postive results with my driver. My tee shots are low "zingers" off the tee with little distance and they curve sharply to the left. The only good part about this horrible tee shot is that it is consistent. Out of 18 holes 14 of my drives are exactly the same. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Answer
all of us go through this phase where we just can't seem to hit the ball. its a pahse that cannot be avoided. so don't feel too frustrated if you can't seem to hit your driver. there are some basic things that you could work on to prvent hitting a severe hook. one is to check your set-up. is everything aligned right? have someone such as your instructor to quickly check for your set-up. see if your ball position is too far up ahead in your stance. also check for your grip. you may be grabbing the club in a way that is producing the hook. it happens all the time so check to make sure that you have proper grip. you should see two of your left knuckes and the gap between your index and your thumb should be pointed to your right ear. another thing you could check for is your tempo. maybe is a little too fast? or maybe its a little too slow? try different things... i suggest you try to turn your hips at the moment of impact to make sure your clubface doesn't close. one last thing is to check your swing plane. my guess is that its either too shallow or too steep. ask someone if your swing plane is on the proper angle. if it isn't.. then work on it. and DO NOT lift up your body at the point of impact. do try to keep your body angle all the way to the finish of your swing. many people tends to lift their body up as they hit the ball and it produces a severe hook. good luck and if you have further questions.. then let me know. and don't worry so much about the problem. it will eventually go away if you keep working at it.
