shaft selection

Question
Hello... I do not want to pay $50 to go on a launch monitor and get fitted for the proper shaft... I know the shaft that i want (aldila vs proto) for a taylormade burner tp head.  but i don't know what weight i want or the tipping specs that i want.  is there a way to tell this based on my current ball height flight and/or swing speed (i hit a 7 iron about 158).

also, i am 95% sure, but do you know for sure that i can just buy a driver head, buy a shaft, and bring these two things to a reshafting professional and he will be able to put the shaft on the driver?

thank you!

Answer
Hey Dave,

Sorry for the delay.  I'm of the opinion that most golfers get WAY too worried about kick points, tip flex, torque, etc.  The best way to try out several shafts is going to be at a demo day sponsored by Taylor Made.  If you can find one near you, you'll be able to hit their clubs with a variety of shafts, and their rep can explain to you the features and benefits of the different shaft options.  I'm pretty sure that you're not going to be able to get a head from them without a shaft in it.  You'll have to buy a stock club and change the shaft or maybe you can custom build one from an authorized Taylor dealer.  For years I ordered custom clubs from manufacturers because I didn't trust anybody else to get it done right.  Then again, I was fortunate enough to get most of my clubs for free.  A good repair guy can do it for you, once you get the parts you want.

Hope this helps.

John
