Pulling
Question
I am a 12-14 handicap. I hit the ball solidly most of the time, but lately I have been pulling my irons and my 3-wood (off the tee - I don't carry a driver.) Once in a while I will slice a drive, but most of the time if I hit it bad, it's a pull. I usually hit a nice fade with my woods, but I couldn't fade/slice an iron if my life depended on it. Seriously - I've tried to do it to get out of trouble and I just can't do it. I'm fairly certain that it is not my grip. A friend of mine said that it looks like I'm getting my shoulders and/or hips through too fast.
Is there a swing thought that would help me with this. Like keeping my right foot planted, or something like that? I'm just looking for something simple that will keep me from doing this.
Thanks,
Dave
Answer
hm... i see what you are going through. i know it feels like your arms are moving too fast ahead of the body...
usually, i would tell you too check your grip but it sounds like you are certain that its not the grip thats the fault. BUT do me a favor and just TRY grabbing the club weaker. if you see two knuckles on your left hand, then try one and a half knuckle. see if that works.
to get back to your proper tempo, one way that always seem to work is SLOWING down. especially your arm movment. remember, you want to turn your lower body first and then move the upper body in order to prevent hook. if you are looking for a simple thought, then try this...
keep your hands still through the impact without realeasing your arms. try to get the face of the club to face the target for as long as possible troughout your swing.
immediate way to emend this problem is, like i said, weakening your grip by giving one and a half of a knucle a try. you will see immediate difference in the way the ball fly. as you gradually, improve your ball tractory, you will see that the ball flies higher and straighter. practice this way for awhile then slowly get back to the old way of grabbing the club.
hope i helped if you have more questions, then let me know.
