Iron Selection
Question
I have been playing golf for several years now and am a very high handicapper. I have decided to get rid of my piece meal set of Dunlop clubs and buy a nice set of irons. I have narrowed it down to two sets. The Taylor Made RAC OS2 and the Nike Ignite. I have been leaning torwards the Ignite simply b/c the 3 iron has been replaced with a Hybrid. Can you give me any thoughts or advice. Also is it better to go with a steel shaft or graphite? I have been leaning toward a steel shaft. Thanks in advance!
Answer
Hello and thank you for asking. As far the irons themselves, its all personal preference, nothing beats your trying them out on the course or range, and first impressions are everything. Never buy any club thinnking "I'll get used to it." As any non-tour player (even tour players now), hybrids and woods are always a better choice than long irons. I have actually had great days with long irons, but over the long haul, we are not playing to have one great day out of 6 months, but a decent day every day.
Same with steel and graphite. Graphite is easier on the arms, more forgiving, lighter, and better handling overall. Steel requires you to have a certain clubhead speed, and not mishit a lot or else it will be painful after a while.
