Driver spin and trajectory
Question
I am a 12.8 handicap, I've been playing for about 6 years. I have always been a high ball hitter with my irons and Driver. I currently play a 10.5 deg Stiff Taylor Made R7 Draw driver. I get little or no roll out after the ball lands. I hit it 235-250 most of the time, but have notice d pitch marks and the ball seems to have rolled back not bounded forward at all. I feel that I would average 270 or so if I could just get 15-20 yards of roll. My ball flight is straight to a little draw most of the time. My bad misses with the driver are a high hook and the occasional low hook.
Answer
Hey Jason,
The 10.5 degre driver is way on up there when it comes to loft. High lofted drivers are great for beginners or people who naturally hit the ball lower. If you've been playing for a number of years now I would recommend trying some drivers with less loft. Not saying that you should go to the other extreme and get a 7.5, but look into some 8 or 8.5 degrees with a shaft similar to what you're hitting now. Try to find a demo day, borrow a friend's club, or something so that you can hit a few balls before making your purchase. Never by a club without hitting one first, if at all possible. Lower loft will put less backspin on the ball at impact, therefore keeping the ball flight lower... but beware...less backspin means there will usually ne more side spin on miss hits, so your hooks might be more pronounced. In theory, though, less loft should equate to lower flight, more roll, and slightly longer drives.
Have fun.
