Giving Lessons
Question
I've been playing and studying the game, with many lessons from a pro, for only 1 1/2 years, and love it. One day in the furture, I would like to teach it.....even if only to beginners, but not as a full time job. Since I'm not going to work at a golf course, where could I get training to do this? Thank you.
Answer
Gregg,
This is an area that I don't know that much about. I know there are lots of schools out there that will train you to become a teaching professional. I don't know much about them and sounds as if you don't plan on teaching golf lessons for a living. I would start by talking to your pro about it. Explain to him/her that you think you might enjoy teaching a little. Maybe you could volunteer to help out at a junior golf camp or school in the summer, or there may be some way to get involved and volunteer through the First Tee program in your area.
You can train golf teachers to teach people to swing according to a certain methodology, or swing style. I have to believe that it would be difficult to go from no experience to being a great teacher in the amount of time you could spend at someone's golf teaching school.
A good pro's best insight comes from practically a lifetime of competition, practice, hitting balls, working with other teachers and studying the game.
Good luck and have fun with it.
