Marking your ball
Question
If you are putting on the fringe are you allowed to mark your ball?
Answer
Max,
Usually...no...you're not allowed to mark the ball any place but on the green. There could be some exceptions. If your ball and another player's ball are so close together that one ball impedes the stroke of the other player, the second ball may be marked so that the player who is away can make his or her stroke. Also, during very wet conditions in tournament play the "lift clean and place" rule could be put into effect. In that case you would be able to mark the ball on the fringe. There are other examples like these, but I assume your question is about marking the ball on the fringe and replacing it before you putt, which is not allowed. The USGA's web site is a great source information about rulings like this.
Good luck and have fun.
