Getting there

Question
QUESTION: What I carry now are Adams Tight Lies 2 and 5 woods, 25.5 degree 7 wood, hybrid 6 iron, 7-GW, 57 degree SW, 64 deg TW.

The other day at the range, I was having trouble with woods, and someone noticed I was going over the top on the fairway woods.  Once I started becoming conscious of it, I got a lot more consistent with the woods (I have Big Bertha 5 and 7 woods that I can hit off any crummy lie now) and it might even explain why I was able to hit my conventional 4-6 irons today (I haven't hit a 4 iron too well for a year now; I hit it about 200 yards today).  Also, I'm not fighting my right hand wanting to lay flat.  I'll continue to practice the middle irons but continue to play golf with the 7 wood and hybrid 6.  I was good at long irons before.

In regards to the 7 wood and 6 iron, proper swingweight made a big difference (I put lead tape on both and got the positioning right).  I can play these two on any lie and have the ball position anywhere from just off my left heel to just in front of my right toe.

ANSWER: Hi Lou:

That is fine Lou, but I would caution you on moving the ball too far around between your feet.  Consistency starts with being consistent.  The best place I have found to start with is the ball.  Just forward of center seems to be the most consistent spot.  If you move the ball around as much as you describe, you move the ball about a foot and half, depending on what club you are using.  Be careful, because you'll have too many bottoming out points along the arc of the swing.  Catching it solid sometimes becomes an issue.  Food for thought.

QUESTION: Actually with all fairway woods (even the shortened ones), I play them a couple inches behind my left heel (best for ball striking).  The 25.5 is a keeper and I consider it more like a 9 wood (I get about 175-180 out of it).  I also went ahead and weighted my 21 degree Orlimar Trimetal 7 wood (that was another one I shortened 1 inch and it has been my "go-to" wood for awhile) and I hit it even better than before (the average distance is between 190-200 but I hit it very consistent and straight).  So the bottom line is two 7 woods in the golf bag.

I think I learned my lesson on cutting shafts (which I will never do again - I learned how to hit standard length shafts on woods).  Swingweight makes a huge difference in the feel and consistency.  With the right swingweight, I slow down my tempo and hit the ball better.

Answer
Hey Lou:
You are correct in your thinking.  You actually don't have 2 7 woods if both those clubs allow you to cover 25 to 30 yards in distance.  Good luck with them.  Swingweight does indeed make a huge difference.  Remember though, clubs should fit your golf swing.  You should not have to try to make your golf swing fit a club.
