Driver issue
Question
Hi Ken, I play off seven and hit fairly straight, slight fade. I have had my Woods, Taylor Made burner bubble, 1, 3 & 5 wood for years and love them still. Problem is that my Driver has become increasingly wild, with a big slice. Have spent weeks trying to correct it, but think that maybe the stiff shaft on the club has weakened. Does this happen to old graphite shafts? I have a fast swing which exacerbates the problem, or am i just a rotten driver?
Answer
Hi Simon,
Since you hit a slight fade to begin with, it's not surprising that your driver could develop a slice. It has left loft (so more sidespin) and a bigger head (harder to close the club face).
Old graphite shafts will fatigue a bit over time which might result in the club face not closing as quickly. See if you can find a similar club and shaft at your local store. Give it and your club a twist at the clubhead while holding onto the grip and see if there is any difference. Better yet, hit a few balls with the newer club and see if there is a difference in your ball flight.
As a swing tip with your old driver, play the ball an inch more forward in your stance. This will allow more time for the club to close.
Hope this helps.
