short and low hook

Question
Stanley,

I have been playing for about 8 years and never had a chance to get any professional lessons. I mostly hit around 82, but I can be easily ended up over 90s if my inherit draw becomes cursed short and ugly hook. I've been working hard to fix that, but it just comes and goes.
I've been trying different grips, ball positions, swing paths, but none seems to work. I think my biggest problem is tempo. I tend to move my upper body first instead of lower body. If I am focus on this stuff too much, I even cannot hit the ball correctly. Can you please advice me?

am have not quite understood the difference in shaft kick points..i.e. low, mid, high.
I can hit a drive roughly 245 - 250. I use my legs quite a bit. In fact, I tend to sway as oppose to turn into the shot. I have active hands too. My natural ball flight is a slight draw, but too occasionally it turns into an ugly low hook with no distance. Help.

Answer
i am wondering if this is a dillemma that you have faced for 8 full years....  if it is, then i don't what i can do over internet to help you...  but if this is something that occured recently, then we can work something out.
there are two causes to this problem.
1.  you swing is too steep
2.  your swing may be too shallow
either way, too much of something is never good.
a duck hook usually means you are out of sync.  usually, this happens when you are not feeling comfortable or not trusting 100 percent on your golf swing.  if you are thinking about that duck hook before you hit the ball, then you are going to be making a jerking move.  so i would say just relax, don't worry about the outcome and let your swing do the work.  let your NATURAL swing come out.  not your FORCED swing.  natural swings tend to bring out straight shots because the body motion is fluid, within sync and it has good tempo.  this is not baseball where you are trying to jerk one out of the park.  regarding your tempo, just SLOW down.  don't worry about upper or lower body.  the swing just doesn't work that way.  your lower body naturally uncoils first. if you let your swing do the work, you will feel that your lower and upper body is doing the turning at the same time.
kick points are a single concept.  when you swing the ball, there is a point in which the club releases at the bottom of the swing.  different kick points will release the club at different times.  it can be important in a way that proper kick points help you produce straighter shots.  but i can guarantee you that your duck hook is not the fault of this.  if you have a draw, then you may blame the kick point for releasing too quickly, but if you have duck hook, then its your swing to blame.  standard clubs do not have such terrible kick points.  if you want to get a proper kick point, then get your club fitted.  they will test out your swing and see which shaft is right for you.
