Swing Path

Question
Eddie,

I have been trying the 12 to 12 thing to help my inside to out swing, but nothing was really changing.  i videoed myself and realized that when i take it back, i flip it to the outside like Jay Haas, just worse and more flippy.  I know why jay does it, but im not trying to do it, and i think that that is why i hit it outside to in.  what can i do to get my takeaway back straight so i can actually feel confident in my downswing being correct.

Another thing, i have been trying the flatter back swing, kind of like the stack and tilt, just without the tilt part, and i found my ball-striking to be better, just less control.  should i stick with what i already use, or switch to that?

Last thing, i have been hitting all my irons fat, especially long ones like 5 or 6, and i cant really figure out why.  im thinking it may be because of  un-hinging my wrists to early, but do you have any idea?

thanks,
Garrett

Answer
Hi Garrett:
Sorry if you did not get this answer, but I'll answer it again.  At home, set up with your club against a wall.  Now practice making the correct backswing.  Obviously the wall will not let you take the club away outside.  You will FEEL a more inside, one piece takeaway to the top.  From there, you must now FEEL as though you are swinging towards 10 o'clock.  You are swinging too far from the inside and anytime the club approaches the ball from too far inside, it is too shallow, so you will bottom out behind the ball, you will tend to hit shots thin and straight right.  When you get sick of hitting balls to the right, you will begin to flip your hands at it and start hitting hooks and duck hooks.  So the golf club must approach the ball from a different path.  So once you get the club to the top of the backswing (and I would only go about three quarters for awhile), swing the club forward towards 10 o'clock.  That will put the club on a steeper path to the ball so you can catch the ball first and take the divot second, on the proper side of the ball.  It won't take you long to get a FEEL  for it.  But start right at home against a wall.  Put the clubhead against the baseboard and make some backswings.  Feel what it is like to make the correct backswing away from the ball to the top.  Then work on routing the club to a better ball striking position through the impact area.  Then go practice.
