trouble with irons
Question
Hi Stanley,
My name is Steve. I am a right handed golfer and I'm having trouble with my iron shots. When I make contact with the ball it goes to the left of where I'm aiming. It doesn't curve, it just goes straight to the left of the target. I play my irons from the middle of my stance. I was hoping you'd be able to shed some light on why this is happening and what I can try to correct it.
Thanks,
Steve
Answer
the thing about golf, is that sometimes along the way, you are going to pick up bad habits that is going to give you poor contact. everyone goes through it, including tiger woods. unfortunately, the info that you have provided me doesn't really spark up any ideas in my head.... the only i can spot the error is if i can get a video clip of your swing...
but here are some factors on why you may be hitting the shots to the left.
1. your tempo is off
solution: SLOW DOWN. count 1 on the backswing and then count 2 on the downswing. say this slowly to yourself and you can find a way to slow down a bit.
2. your club-face is closed at impact
to avoid this, make more of a lower-body movement that can compensate your quick upper body
3. your grip is wrong
if you have experieced hitting slices or unwanted faces before, then the chances are, you have changed your grip without you actually knowing about it. weaken the grip a little bit by rotating your left hand toward the left side a little more. in another words, try BARELY see two knuckles on your left hand when you are gripping the club. sometimes, this can give you immediate result if you do it right. so i would really concentrate on your grip and your tempo.
good luck
