Swing flaw

Question
I am a 2 handicap and have developed a problem of taking the club back outside the line (which promotes me picking the club up) and sliding forward on the downswing. Most shots are delofted and pulled. Any swing thoughts or drills you have in mind. One instructor says I am losing my center. Does that make sense?
Thanks

Answer
Hi and thank you for asking.  Yes you are losing your center, meaning that your center of mass is shifting too much laterally, or swaying.  You want to make sure throughout your swing, you want to keep your upper body within the width of your feet.  A good drill is the shoulder turn drill.  Get in your stance without a club, put your arms cross the front of our chest on top of each other, and then simply turn your upper body to the backswing and to the forward swing.  Pretend your upper body is in a cylinder, or a can, and you are only allowed to rotate it in that can.  Your problem is a common one for someone who works too ahrd on weight shifts and leg work.  Good players need to fine tune the basics too, and as far as weight shift, as long as you are finishing on your front foot by about 90%, weight shift is the last thing you have to worry about.
