Driving Distance as it relates to left or right side spin
Question
I am a right handed 14 Handicap golfer. I am working on improving my Driving Distance and I realize that there are many factors. This question is regarding side spin. I was always under the belief that a right to left draw would cause the ball to travel further due to the spin being different than a slight fade which is produced by a different side spin. Assuming a flat fairway and all things equal (ball flight etc), what would produce a longer shot?
Answer
Hi Steve,
It depends on the firmness on the ground. A fade will have greater backspin and thus a longer flight time. A draw will have less backspin and a shorter flight time.
Typically, a fade will carry further than a draw. It will land at a steeper angle than a draw as well.
So, it all depends on the roll. If the fairways are firm, a draw would carry a shorter distance but roll farther and thus might end up with a great overall distance.
Under soft conditions, the fade would have a great total distance because of it's longer carry.
Hope this helps.
