How do I improve my ratio of ball speed to club head speed (Smash Factor)
Question
My swing with my Driver was recently analyzed on a launch monitor and my ration of ball head speed to club head speed is about 1.35. I want to get it closer to 1.50 so that I can improve my distance. All things being equal with the equipment (Same Driver being used - since I am not changing drivers), what the 3 most important factors regarding my swing technique that I should focus on to get this improvement with a driver? Thanks.
Answer
Hey Steven,
What the heck is a "smash factor?" I don't know what this means exactly, other than it's probably another catch phrase to make you think you don't hit the ball far enough. I don't play as much as I used to, but I still play to a 1 or 2 handicap and I don't ever worry about things like this. It's really too easy to over analyze the golf swing and wind up worse off than you were. I'll give you a tip to increase club head speed, maybe that will help with this smash thing. You'll notice one thing about most golfers that hit the ball a long way...big, big shoulder turns on the way back, with not much hip action until the club is on the way down. It sort of allows you to coil up better and generate more power on the way down. If I have a need to absolutely try and knock the cover off the ball, I make sure I take the club away nice and slow with a huge shoulder turn. This lets me take a bigger cut at the ball without messing up my timing. It's not my normal driver swing, like I said, but one I'll use if I need a few extra yards of carry. If I were you I'd forget about this smashing stuff and spend more time...yep, you guessed it...the practice green. If you need a fancy name call it the "tap factor." I mean, if you think about it, if you had a choice between dropping the number of putts in a round by 15% or increasing your driver yardage 15%, you'd be crazy not to take the lower number of putts. Besides, what happens if you increase that number from 1.30 to 1.5 and miss hit the ball? That .15 difference would only make the ball fly further out of bounds, right?
Practice, have fun, and don't worry so much about the smash thing.
