CHOICE OF SHAFT
Question
HELLO. I PLAY OF A HANDICAP OF 9 BUT I WAS AN 8. I CURRENTLY HAVE FIRM FLEX FITTED TO MY DRIVER AND FAIRWAY WOODS. I HAVE A CLUBHEAD SPEED OF AROUND 75 MPH AND A QUITE A FAST ACTION. WOULD I BENEFIT FROM A CHANGE OF SHAFT OR INDEED REVERTING TO METAL IN MY FAIRWAYS. I AM 47 YEAR OLD, FAIRLY FIT, 5 FT 10" - BUT SEEM TO BE LOSING DISTANCE THROUGHOUT MY CLUBS. CAN YOU PLEASE ADVISE?? MANY THANKS AND KIND REGARDS FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON!
Answer
Hello Bob: I would suggest regular shafts in all clubs. I am 61 with a club head speed of 90 and use regular shafts in my irons and a soft stiff in my woods. I actually should go to regular in the woods as well as these are shafts fitted to me several years ago.
Graphite or steel makes little difference any more although graphite is lighter and will add to club head speed.
As for the loss of distance, I would check your aim and balance. If either is off, club head speed is compromised; aim because the club is re-routed to swing at the target and balance because without it, the swing becomes short and jerky.
Goof luck to you Bob and best wishes to you and yours this Christmas and into the new year.
Fairways and Greens,
John
