teaching to young boy
Question
My son is 7 years old and right handed for everything (throwing, tennis, writing) except hitting a baseball where he is started off 4 years ago as a natural lefty and has stayed that way. With golf, is it best to have him learn as a righty or lefty?
Answer
Hi Tom:
Let him do both and see which one fits his eye better. In todays technologically advanced golf society, it does not matter if he plays righty or lefty. I see so many more young kids playing golf left handed than ever before. I teach the #3 ranked junior golfer in the country.....and he just turned 8. So I think you should let him decide that by watching him and seeing what side he seems to have the greatest of ease at. I would think if he hits a baseball from the left side, he might be used to it. But remember in golf, the ball is not moving, so that might not mean anything once he gets going. Just make sure to get him two real important things, no matter what side he plays from: Professional PGA Golf Instruction and proper fitting Junior Golf Equipment. DO NOT CUT SOMETHING DOWN FOR HIM. IT'S TOO HEAVY AND IT LEADS TO BAD HABITS. Juniors need light golf clubs so they can swing them. Get him fit properly and watch him go. Have fun and good luck to him.
