playing golf
Question
Hi Sir-
I have a son 2 year old and i am wondering how to start him in plying golf. Is there any program to attend? or how to get him start? Thanks
Answer
Hello Andy:
I would start him with a plastic ball and plastic club. You could get them at any sporting goods store. Let him whack it around for a while. I would see what his interest level is. Take him to a driving range and let him hit some real balls with a real club. They make junior clubs for kids as small as 5 years old I believe. Do not cut down a men's club and give it to him. Get him a little junior golf club, because they are real light and he can swing it. If he shows an interest by age 5 or 6, consider taking him to a PGA Instructor or perhaps to the local junior summer program. Let him see if he likes it. I personally begin private golf lessons with kids at age 8. I made one exception, for a 7 year old who is ranked #3 in the U.S.A. for kids under 8. At age 8, if interested, they seem to want to learn more. It's a waste of everybodys time and money if the child has no attention span and really doesn't want to be there in the first place. But if he shows an interest, they do just fine from ages 8-10 to start. Check out some kids golf sites and see what is out there in your neighborhood. Do a search for Kids Golf Lessons or Programs. There are some good ones out there. But most important of all......HAVE FUN WITH HIM! DO NOT BEAT GOLF INTO HIM. Let him enjoy the game and the process.
