Answer
Hi Lee:
You will need to practice to correct this Lee. There are many reasons why people "overswing". But, let's just give you a great drill and check point to do for now. If you think you'll hit it farther if the club goes back more, you're wrong. But if you don't believe that, then try this. I would have you hit many practice balls having the discipline to do the following. Assuming you can physically do this, swing the club back until your left arm is parallel to the ground. The shaft should be at a 90 degree angle to your left arm (fully cocked). Make sure your shoulders have rotated and turned to 90 degrees to the targetline. So, full shoulder turn (90 degrees) and a fully cocked club swung back to a three quarter swing. Believe it or not Lee, that is powerful. Then give me full acceleration to a balanced finish. So make a ton of practice swings to get this position down. Check yourself in a mirror to make sure you are OK. Hit balls and sense the difference. A full shoulder turn and a three quarter swing is what I do with all my lessons that overswing. Pretty soon, their control is much better and their ball contact is much better. There is no distance loss, just better, quality shots. But it takes practice.
