Hybrids - eureka!!
Question
QUESTION: I was at the base PX over the weekend and finally found a hybrid that I like. I initially bought a Nike CPR 4/26 hybrid and liked the feel of it, so I went back yesterday and got a 3/22. The heads are more like a fairway wood and the 3 iron is now getting easier to hit than my 7 wood. Also, at the driving range I was banging the 3 iron pretty close to 200 yd. What is nice about these clubs is that I can practice punch shots and half swing shots at my fave park.
Also resurrected my Adams GT3 5 wood and started banging that about 210-220 once I got used to it. While I was at it, I pulled out the driver (the Taylor Made R540) and was really banging the heck out of it, both in my draw stance (closed, 2nd knuckle tee height off left toe) and "stinger" stance (slightly behind left heel, square stance, about 1 1/4 knuckle tee height) - more like smashing it.
The Puma 9 wood will be a permanent fixture in the bag, regardless because I can hit it off any lie on the golf course. Also taking the 7 wood along before playing golf if it hits better on a given day than the 3 iron. Kind of nice to have a couple clubs to fall back on.
Now my 6 iron arena is "which one do I want to use today?" The choices are the Snake Eyes hybrid (34 deg loft), my Nickent 3DX 29 deg, and the P2 conventional iron.
I am actually practicing a lot more short game shots (such as over greenside bunkers with the 64 and finding a niche with chip shots).
ANSWER: Way to go Lou, I guess that why golf is so awesome. When we finally find something that makes it much easier to do (shoot lower scores), something else is out there somewhere that might make it even easier. It is the fun of the game and the journey in it. It sure sounds like you are enjoying both.

QUESTION: Well, the conventional 6 iron won out over the 34 deg hybrid. I hit it way better off a tight lie. The ground at Adm Baker driving range is as hard as a rock.
ANSWER: Lou:
Agreed. Good choice.

QUESTION: The hybrid 3 iron and 4 iron (for that matter, it occasionally happens with the 34 degree hybrid)... When I hit them correctly, the distance is pretty good (and the feel is pretty good because of the head profile). The problem is my wrists have a tendency to snap at impact (if I don't pay attention to it) and, even though I try to swing along the target line, the club is forced violently left (with a nasty snap hook) and I have trouble controlling it. I don't feel like I am casting the club on the downswing, but my wrists want to snap at impact. I don't have this problem with irons or the 9 wood.
Answer
Lou:
The only thing you need to do is keep your arms swinging to the target. Make sure you are swinging your arms past impact. If you stop at the impact area, you'll try to "hit" it with your hands / wrists. Keep your arms moving into the follow through.
