Misquoting rules
Question
I've got a question concering a player misquoting rules. If you ask your partner for a ruling on something and they give you the wrong advice, are you at fault, is your partner,or is their shared blame.
For instance I hit a wrong ball I found on a course (same exact type of ball, one number off and we found my actual ball about 25yds up after I had already hit). His ruling was to keep playing the wrong ball with a one stroke penalty while the actual is 2 strokes and to play the correct ball.
While it didnt make a huge difference for the rest of the game, my original ball was in a far better position and this cost me on the that hole. Does he share the blame or am I completely at fault. Thanks.
Answer
Dear Erik, thanks for the question. Unfortunately I'm afraid that responsibility falls only on you...therefore in your example, you would have been in breach. With that said Erik, under rule 33-7, if a committee in charge of the competition feels that a player purposely mislead another player, the committee can disqualify said player for his intentions to deceive. This wouldn't affect the fooled player unfortunately, but would hopefully deter such behavior again. Good luck, thanks again for asking and remember...
