Question
HI Eddie i am only 5" 3 inches tall and cant get proper custom fit in this country U.K  my swing speed is 75mph and i use regular shafts i know that cutting down the shaft makes them stiffer but if i cut 2 and 1/2 inches off the butt end how much stiffer will they become and will it make that much difference to me would they become too stiff or would cutting down senior flex shafts be better please help cant seem to get the truth in this country
im not trying to become a pro i just want to hit the ball straight and enjoy a game (whilst still competing) with and against my friends any help would be really appreciated
many thanks.......john

Answer
Hello John:

I understand.  I am 5'2" and am the shortest male professional golfer to ever play in the U.S. Open Championship.  I play with regular length clubs, stiff shafts, and have a 45 inch driver.  I guess I want to know why you would consider cutting your shafts 2 and a half inches?  I know you are not trying to become a Professional John, however, I question the reasoning.  Just like I questioned the reasoning when the so called "clubfitting experts" told me my clubs should be 1-2 inches shorter because I was short.  Not good enough of an answer for me.  I believe that your swing at 75 miles per hour warrants clubs that are standard length or maybe a half inch shorter than standard.  You should be in regular steel or soft stiff graphite shafts.  Nowadays John, the technology is so good in shafts that a soft graphite stiff shaft or a Senior flex might be the ticket to your consistency and more distance.  Please don't cut down your shafts just because your short.  That is hogwash.  Go someplace where you can hit clubs and try them out.  Regular shafts in steel (irons only), soft stiff or Senior flex in graphite (irons and woods), regular length or maybe a half inch shorter than standard.  Then you just need to make sure the lie of the clubs are flat enough to match your golf swing.  I have 3 different lie angles throughout my set of clubs.  My 4 and 5 iron are 2 degrees flat, my 6-9 iron is 3 degrees flat, and my pw-lw is 4 degrees flat.  I know that because I hit golf balls and watched and felt what was happening.  You need to do the same thing.  Good luck John, let me know if I can help more.
