QuestionHi,
I am writing an article on golfer's elbow. I want to know if golfers you have
worked/played with, have been able to play with this condition or is it
something that generally sidelines a golfer for a while. Is there anything that
you generally recommend in order to avoid this condition?
AnswerDonna,
I have played with golfers that have this condition. They usually wear a band just below the elbow to alleviate as much pain as possible. It is very painful and the doctors that I have consulted recommend rest and certain exercises.
My opinion of the cause is that golfers put too much pressure on the club with their hands. Players have a tendency to squeeze the club because they think they have more control this way which is false. This puts quite a bit of stress on the tendon and then you have impact between the club and the ball at 70 - 115 miles per hour. OUCH!
Players should hold the club lightly but secure. A good grip is the cornerstone of the golf swing. Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons" chapter 1 is a great chapter on the correct grip.
Hope this helps and good luck with your article. Send me a copy when you're finished.
