Hitting short irons on the heel
Question
I have a problem hitting 9-SW. About once or twice a round I will shank it horribly. I've compensated by looking behind the ball when I swing, but I curious as to the cause. It happens more on a half to 3/4 shot than a full one. I hit my 6-8 with a draw, and 3-5 is more of a hook sometimes bordering on a draw. My driver is mostly straight to a draw, with my misses being left.
Answer
Hi there and thank you for asking. One of the main causes of your problem is the fact that you probably are not implementing enough shoulder turn on the backswing of the wedges and shorties. Players tend to do that because it is a shorter swing, but remember a full wedge shot still requires about a 90 degree shoulder turn, although you can take a shorter arm swing. With less shoulder turns, you basically never get behind/inside the ball, so you end up leading with your heel of the club.
