Draw with Mid-Short Irons, Slice/Cut with long Irons, woods and Driver
Question
Hi,
I have a draw with my short irons sometimes a pull draw and a pull slice with my longer irons and driver. When I make solid contact I pull the longer clubs about 15 - 20 yards left of target.
My fundamentals and address position are perfectly aligned to target. My swing plane is a little flat but not greatly. I seem to hit straight shots if I feel like I am hitting at the ball rather than swinging through the ball.
I am a 12 handicapper and hit the ball reasonable length (155 yards with a 7 iron).
I don't think I am coming over the top, it almost feels like the club "dives" inside the line just prior to impact.
Answer
Hi Leigh:
Great observation. Chances are you do not come over the top. However, your club is definitely moving to the inside at and after impact. Your dead on with hitting "at" the ball instead of swinging through it. Here is a simple tip to help you. Picture your target out in the distance (like the flagstick). If you line up perfectly and are square to the target, picture the face of a clock. Twelve o'clock is the flagstick. When you swing your club at and through the impact area, you are swinging it towards 10 o'clock. By not swinging the club through the ball, you will tend to quit at the bottom and try to save it with your hands. If the club stops swinging (and your arms stop moving), there is a tendency to shut it down and slap at it. So, you need to hit some balls and keep your arms, hands and club swinging towards 1 o'clock for awhile. If I stood out in front of you and positioned myself at 1 o'clock and asked you to swing the club towards me, could you do it? Of course you could (without a ball there!). But if I am not there and it's just you and the ball, you need to do the same thing. No more pulls, just balls that start out a lot straighter. Get the picture??
