Driver trouble
Question
My new driver a TM Quad 10.5 stiff is giving me trouble: 50% of the time it hooks and goes 180 yards or so. The few times I do hit it good is when I slow down a bit and finish high rather than near left shoulder. When I do hit it well it goes about 240 which is a bit frustrating as I hit my 7 iron 165. I score to mid and low 80's but if I can consistently hit 260 plus drives I know I will be in high 70's on a regular basis. What is my deal?
Answer
Hey Chris:
I would find yourself a respected and professional clubfitter and go get fit. I think you need to find the right combination of shaft, shaft flex and loft. Assuming you hit your driver solid, which if you hit the 7 iron 165, that is not a problem. But if you only hit it somewhere between 180 and 240, something is wrong. I would check your club first. Don't go to a retail store, find a true clubfitter and see what they say. If possible, hit some clubs and test them out. Other than that Chris, slowing down your swing may feel like the thing to do, but the more you slow it down the shorter you'll hit it. You have to swing a driver and let it rip. Timing is one thing, but your speed issue just might be related to you slowing down. Why not go to the range and hit drivers swinging as fast as you can and finishing high and see what happens.
