Golf Range Distance
Question
Our club recently constructed a driving range on a sloped area. (I am a professional engineer in Penna) Some members were concerned that the distance flags were incorrect. I measured all five flag distances, horizontal, slope distance and difference in elevation. One of the flags had a vertical difference in elevation of 75'. My question: Rather than looking for an old projectile calculation from my physics textbooks, does the USGA have a standard distance adjustment tool for driving ranges on steep slopes?
Answer
Hi Tim,
I'm not aware of any USGA adjustment for steep slopes. Try checking their site, www.usga.org.
Take a look at this page from my site:

In my consulting work, I've developed an accurate golf ball trajectory model (that takes into account air friction, backspin, sidespin, etc). I've analyzed the effect of hitting uphill and downhill shots. The effect differs a bit depending on your ball speed and trajectory.
If you'd like some specific consulting on your Driving Range, I can help. Look at this page:

Hope this helps.
