Getting fitted with golf clubs
Question
Hey Eddie,
My question is regarding getting fitted for golf clubs. I have never been fitted so I dont know what to do or look for. I already have golf clubs, so if i get fitted, will I have to get new clubs?
Answer
Hi Eric:
Not necessarily Eric. You may need to get some different shafts or have your club lie angles altered, but that doesn't mean you necessarily need a full set of new equipment. Getting fit for clubs is nothing more than that. You are getting measured to see what will work best for you. You should be under no obligation to buy anything from anybody. Most fitters charge a $50-75 fee for the fitting, but of course would eat that fee if you bought from them. The most important parts of a fitting are the correct flex of the shaft for you and the correct lie angles (irons) for your swing. You need to hit balls, lots of them. It is best if you actually are outside watching the ball fly. Most of them today are done indoors with computer launch monitors and computers. I guess it's OK, but nothing takes the place of you hitting balls, and watching what it does. Clubfitting is a great experience and educational process. It's amazing what they can do with clubs nowadays. Ask around to find out who a good clubfitter or repairman is in your area. Golfers know who they are. And if you don't know anyone, call a golf course and ask to speak to the Head Professional. He'll steer you in the right direction. Another good way to check is to go to a site like www.pinggolf.com, take a look around, and find a clubfitter near you. Remember, just because they might fit you doesn't mean you have to purchase clubs right then. You are after information only...you can choose what to do later. But by all means, get fit. It's that important to your game.
