hitting ball to the right
Question
hi john,my grandson on his drive always hits the ball to the right most of the time it curves to the right rather than hitting it straight right.can you give me some help so that i can help him... thanks dom
Answer
Hello Dom, First off, if your grandson is playing clubs that are not fitted properly, that would contribute to the problem. Then I would adjust his set up and profile to match the majority of tour players. Namely: "The Profile"
1. With his legs locked straight, have him bend from the hips until his shoulders are about an inch in front of his toes.
2. Then have him flex his knees enough to just unlock them.
3. Play the ball far enough away so that his arms hang loosely and straight down from the shoulders.
4. Situate the weight so that it settles on the balls of his feet.
As for ball position ("Set up"), the short irons should be played in the middle, the mid irons half way between the middle and left instep and the long clubs opposite the left instep.
The "Profile" described above should not change much at all, the only significant changes will be the ball's position; as the clubs get longer, the ball will move farther away and closer to the left instep.
Clubs that are too long for a player will cause him to stand with the spine too vertical causing the club in turn to go back towards the inside then loop up and over the top. The club then cuts across the ball with the face slightly open, causing the side spin.
I'd give your grandson about 20 or 30 practice sessions to adapt to the new positioning and I'd like to hear back from you with a progress report.
Fairways and Greens,
John
