Forgiving Irons
Question
"I generally hit between the mid 80's to low 90's. I am looking to get a new set of irons and was wondering if you could give me some advice on what are the most forgiving irons. I have been looking at Titleist DCI's the 822 OS and the 762's as well as several Ping Zing models. What are the differences with the different color "dots" for Ping irons? I have a set of oversize "knock-off" cobra's right now and hit them fairly well, but I want to get a new set of irons (w/ steel shafts). Essentially, in your opinion, what is the most forgiving set of irons? Thanks so much!
Mike"
Answer
Mike,
In general, you might look at most of the perimeter weighted irons that are now available. Most importantly, make sure that the next set of irons you purchase are fitted to you. This in itself will make the irons custom to your swing. Items such as lie angle, length, shaft flex and grip size as well as head design all go into making a club that is best suited for you to swing. This makes a big difference as you'll see.
My suggestion is to find a demo day where most club manufacturers will be at a driving range and you'll be allowed to hit many different irons, usually at no charge. They usually have "demo techs" there and they will be able to fit you to their respective clubs. This way you'll be able to compare different irons that fit your swing. This is the best way to decide on which clubs to purchase.
To answer your question about Ping irons and the different color dots, they indicate the lie angle for the clubs. For example, black is standard, blue, white and green are upright and red, brown and orange are flat lies.
To yourself a favor and and attend a demo day before you buy your next set of clubs. To find the next demo day in your area, contact your local PGA pro or local golf club.
Thanks for the question and good luck.
