wrist hinge
Question
Hi.I hit left handed (but am right handed)..my question is about the hinge in the wrist of my right hand at the top of my swing...i feel like i struggle to keep it flat...what can i do to make it flat during the backswing...i currently shoot hi 70's low 80's..I hit my woods well but i feel with my irons that i struggle...i dont think about my hinge when hitting woods..it seems natural..but it doesnt when i swing an iron....help me please...i tend to hit weak fades or slices..with my long irons....if i bow my wrist at the top it stops..but am i supposed to do that...i am a reall good chipper and putter so that saves my scores...i want to hit the ball more sconsistant with my irons/
Answer
Hello and thank you for asking... you should not be bowing your wrist at the top of the backswing, but it is ok to be flat or SLIGHTLY cupped... it also depends on the what grip you use... it is easier to to have a more laid off backswing when you have a weaker grip... but you say that you tend to fade anyway so I assume you are not using a weak grip unless you do not release at all on the swing.
Best thing to do is make a ton of backswings with a mirror behind you... this can be a real mirror or ANY glass window or surface where the area behind the glass is dark, and it will act like a natural mirror. Taking videos on the full swing of yourself is also another way to ensure you are making the proper change, because our "feelings" are usually wrong when it come to the back swing.
