strong grip
Question
Hello john:WHy does a strong grip promote a draw? I would think a weak grip would promote a draw since the wrist of the top hand is facing the target with a weak grip and it should be easier turn the club over with a weak grip. I cannot for the life of me figure out why it easier with a strong grip to hit a draw. thank you
Answer
Hey Jerome.
It's a little hard to describe, but yes, a strong grip does tend tp promote a draw. This isn't scientific at all, but here goes my best explanation. When you swing a club the hands always tend to want to be in a certain position at the moment of impact. That position tends to be a standard position, with the v's all pointing the correct direction and all that mess. Basically what I'm saying is that by the time the club gets back down to the ball right at impact, the HANDS have found their way back into the correct position, but because the club started out being gripped strong, the club has now rotated over along with the hands and is more closed than it should be.
I play with a pretty strong grip. Quite strong, actually, and my handicap is +3.8, or almost 4 strokes on the scratch side of zero, so it is possible to play golf well with a strong grip. You need to have an understanding of how that grip affects the way you strike the ball however, and what your swing is doing to compensate for it.
Hope this answers your question to some degree. BTW...I would much rather teach someone to play with a strong grip than a weak one!
