yardages
Question
If the tee box is in the back of the teeing area, and the flag is in the back of the green, the yardage is not correct on the scoreboard, right? Our course consistently has back t boxes, and back flags, or vice versa. Is this a correct way of sitting up the holes for yardages. I'm a short hitter, and back t boxes and back flags are a real problem for me. Just curious if this is the correct way to set up the course
Answer
Hi Marilyn,
It's standard for a golf course to alternate tee boxes and pin positions. Usually, if the tee box is back, the pin is front, and vice versa. That way, the total yardage of the course remains about the same, and thus, handicaps are calculated correctly.
If your course is always set up with back tee boxes and back pins, then the actual playing yardage is longer than indicated on the scorecard and thus the rating of the course is higher than recorded. Distance is the major factor which determines the difficulty rating of the course.
I'd make a polite suggestion to your golf course to see if things can be changed a bit. If not, then why don't you just tee off from the front of the tee on each hole. Yes, there won't be any tee markers theres, but it's not like you're playing in an official tournament and face disqualification.
Hope this helps.
