Weak Drives
Question
My drives off the tee are asymmetrical with a rise and sharp drop off, the roll is almost non-existent averaging about 205yds. I have had to change my swing to an open stance and ball about 2 inches behind my left heel to deal with a bad left knee LCL. I'm looking for a ball flight with more of a parabolic shape. Is my ball flight related to my new swing or some other flaw. I'm using a 10.5 degree loft. Would a loft of 12 degrees help with my ball flight?
Answer
Scott,
It sounds as though you are hitting down into the ball which makes the ball go up and when it hits the ground because of the decent and the fact that it has back spin so the roll is non-existent.
Remember: When you hit down the ball goes up and conversely if you hit up on the ball it goes down.
Instead of hitting with a descending blow, you'll want to hit the ball when your driver is ascending. To do this, let's tee the ball higher and with the thought of leaving the tee in the ground after making contact with the ball. This will force you to hit up on the ball (less back spin) which will give you a better trajectory and finally some roll.
I don't feel like going to a more lofted club would help with your trajectory.
Hope this helps,
