Looking for new irons.

Question
I have been playing for about 10 years now and have played
with hand me down clubs and used clubs bought from the
local newspaper. Now that I have some money, I would like
to get some nicer irons, but I have no idea what to get.
The only new clubs I have had a chance to swing are the
Nike Sumo's which I like the feel of but with no knowledge
of what to look for, I dont really dare make the plunge
yet. Should I be looking for cavity backs, or forged?
Graphite or steel? Which will give me the best distance and
control? I am looking to spend around $300-$400, can you
suggest some nice irons in that range?

Answer
Josh,

Whether you play one a month or 3 times a week, you will enjoy the game so much more if you have your new clubs fit to you. Playing with fitted clubs will enhance your game and lower your score.

The best way to "test out" different brands is to locate a demo day at a club near you. Manufacturers will have their demo techs come out to the driving range with a bag full of clubs with different specifications for you to hit. You'll be able to hit cavity back and forged irons to see what looks better and more importantly what you hit better. You can usually get fitted for a set on the spot. Ask your local PGA Professional if he/she knows about any upcoming demo days.

Not so sure that you can keep the price between $300-$400 but ask the representative at the demo day. If you can't afford the set that you want, wait and save to get that custom fitted set. You will be glad that you did.

Good luck,

Michael Hoffman
