players turn to putt
Question
When establishing the putting sequence do we include the players that are on the fringe of the green or must they putt before those that are on the green. Is there an official rule that covers this issue.
Thank you
Answer
Hello Pierre:
In my 36 years of competitive golf, the person furthest away from the hole plays next, whether or not on the green. I have seen it done both ways. For example, player A is on the green about 70 feet away. Player B is off the green in the fringe, about 20 feet from the hole. Player A putts, then player B chips onto the green. I have also seen it reversed. Either way, there were no penalty infractions, it is just a judgement call as to how to keep the pace of play moving the best. I am in no way a rules expert, however, there is no official rule that states you must do something. Make sure to read Rule 10: Order of Play for more.
