lifting the ball
Question
Hello Michael
I have a real problem of helping the ball into the air. When I do this the result is a bad block to the right-not a slice but a block. What can you recommend I do to stop lifting it. It is really bad with the driver and fairway woods. I have tried everything I can think of to remedy this problem. I can feel myself sliding the club under the ball and it is driving me crazy. Help please.
Thanks Ken
Answer
Ken,
This is common for most golfers, especially those that are just starting the game. They feel that they need to help the ball into the air by lifting the club. The usual result is a topped shot. You mention that for you it's a blocked shot to the right. It sounds as though you are guiding the club through the impact area instead of releasing the club.
Feel the toe of the club pass the heel prior to or at impact. This is releasing the club and it will allow the club to be square at impact. It will also increase the clubhead speed which in turn will increase your distance.
Hope this helps your blocking, lifting problem.
Thank you for the question,
