golf club grips
Question
I recently installed a new winn grip on a club using the new "water activated" double sided tape--after 6 rounds, the grip is now rotating on the shaft---is there any quick fix to restabilize the grip on the shaft, or is the only choice to remove and install a new grip. Thanks for any suggestions. Tom A.
Answer
I've never been a great fan of these water activated grips as I have had the same issue.
If you have a compressor and a air hose and nosle with a small opening, you can try blowing some air in the small opening at the butt end of the grip.
CAUTION: This can be dangerous and I don't recommend doing it unless you have seen it done and are comfortable with power tools. If you want to take the risk, You should have the club shaft secured in vice with a proper clamp and DO NOT have your hands around the grip when you do this. If you have an old club protector tube, you can cut off a portion of it that is just a bit longer than the grip and slip it over the grip while blowing the air in it to protect your hands from possible explosion of the grip. The air pressure will build up and try to release from the lip (the opening at the smaller lower part) of the grip.
If the grip is so loose that it is spinning, you probably need to remove it and reinstall it.
This is also the procedure that you can use to completely remove the grip without destroying it to reuse it. Just place the protective tube around the grip, use a quick burst of air to break loose the grip and then grasp the grip through the plastic tube and while still blowing some air down the small hole, twist the grip until it breaks most of the way loose and there is significant air slipping through the small end. Then you can safely remove the tube and work the grip the rest of the way with your hand, being careful not to use too much air to over expand the grip.
You can get the general idea by looking at photos on this site, but you do need to use the protective tube that I mentioned. http://www.golfbrassballs.com/9201.html
