lie angle fitting
Question
I recently bought a set of taylormade R7 irons that have standard lie angles. I'm 14, 5'6", and my wrist to floor measurement is 33.5" Did I get the right lie angle? Because it looks like the toe is off the ground slightly and the center of the sole barely touches the ground but does so?
Answer
Hey Judah, the long answer is you really can't tell the proper lie angle simply by knowing your height and wrist to floor measurement, or by looking at the club while at address. That method assumes that you will bring the club back to the same exact position at impact as you did at address, a feat not even the best of pros do. In fact, for most pros, they intentionally return the club to a slightly different angle at impact with the hands leading the club head to encourage crisp contact and a descending blow.
The other thing that is not taken into account, assuming that you could return the club to the exact same position at impact as address is the dynamic loading and unloading of the shaft (lag) and toe droop. These things both also effect the position of the club at impact.
In order to get the proper lie angle fit, you must hit some balls off of an impact mat that leaves an impression of some sorts on the sole of the club. If you got fit somewhere that does not use this method, I recommend you get with a local PCS club fitter or PGA professional. The PCS club fitter will often be more knowledgeable than the PGA pro because he specializes in just club making and fitting. I also highly recommend anyone certified to fit for Henry Griffits. They are all true fitting professionals.
