Am I at a disadvantage playing with old clubs?
Question
Hi,
I play with an old set of Golden Ram tour grind irons, which my Granddad gave me a few years ago. They're in reasonable nick, but the 8, 9 and pitch wedge have alot of little marks on the face etc tho. All regripped.
Am I at a big disadavntage playing with these clubs, I know Tom Watson used to play with this make etc, and if I can master playing with them I would be a good golfer. But I play off 17, and although I am improving pretty quickely and can shoot in the 70's now(winter league at moment so handicap doesnt come down) I'm worried that new clubs are so much better than the ones I have. Or are good old clubs still good?
Cheers
Answer
The best set of clubs for your game are the clubs that fit your swing tendencies and the places you primarily play.
I say this because golfers with that concept will tend to modify their swing to fit the clubs not the other way around. The tour grinds where are a great club when made and still have life left in them I am sure. However the newer technology and strong lofts for irons will certainly give you confidence and possibly help improve your score
