SHAFT FLEX AND CLUB HEAD SPEED
Question
Ten years ago I had a driver club head speed of about 105mpg and used X shafts. Aging and a hand injury have reduced that to about 85-90mph. To try to regain some of the lost club head speed I have been experimenting with drivers (as well as other clubs) ranging from a A flex to my old X steel shafted driver and have found that at least for me club head speed is seemingly unchanged no matter what flex I am using. This seems to contradict the "common knowledge" that one can regain distance (presumably from increased club head speed) with a softer flex.
Can you advise me?
Answer
John,
That is strange that the distance stays the same regardless of the shaft. If the distance doesn't change, is the trajectory different with the different shafts?
If shaft flex has no bearing on distance in your case, try increasing the length of the shaft. This will increase distance. There will be a point of diminishing returns however when you start to lose control of the shot. Experiment with different shaft lengths and see which is best for your situation.
Thanks for the question and good luck.
