How to hit an iron
Question
Hello - I'm fairly new to golf (about a year). I get very frustrated with my irons as for the life of me I never hit them. I do great with my woods and drive straight and consistently about 175 - 190 yards.
With my irons I seem to always top them so they either just roll up the course or if they have any flight, they're low and slice to the right. How should I be approaching my irons?
Thanks for the help!!
Answer
Hi and thank you for asking. You're question really requires about a series of 5-10 hour of supervised lesson in order to correct properly. I am not trying to complicate things, I am simply telling you the truth... there are questions in science such as "How do I make ice?" or "How can I create fission from man made elements?" Unfortunately, yours is more like the latter... sorry!
But to get you started, here are some simple tips that may help you do something on your own... causes for topped balls judging from what you have told me so far:
- Swinging up/Flipping the hands up too fast to get the ball airborne... this in fact makes you hit the ball thin instead of hitting under the ball flush
- You are coming out of your swing plane or off your spine angle before and during impact
- Your arms are not at full extension during impact, ie, your short-arming the swing
Slices are caused by (this should be mostly obvious to any golfer these days)
- An open clubface at impact (95% of the cause of a slice)
- An out to in swing path
