Left vrs Right
Question
I am Mr Patrick . Hi - I've always had a problem with why I am a left handed golfer and how the left handed designation came to be. I've asked so many people to explain it, but no one has ever given me a solid answer as to what determines a left or right handed golfer. I thought with your resources you would have a good explanation. Here is my dilemma - I'm right handed - I golf with a glove on my right hand - I stand on the right hand side of the ball if facing my target - the face of my club is on the right hand side - now for the ultimate!!! I golfed with a fellow the other day with no right arm - guess what he was using right hand clubs - I'm more confused than ever now? any thoughts or wisdom appreciated Thanks Patrick Burke
Best regards.
Answer
Hi Pat,
I'm not sure of the origin of the designation of left or right swinger. It was probably from another sport such as cricket or possibly throwing (a right handed thrower rotates and transfers his/her weight the same way as a right swinger).
A right swinger swings with a dominant left arm and is said to hit with the right hand at impact, thus the one armed man to which you referred. A left swinger swings with a dominant right arm and hits with the left hand.
Hope this helps alleviate your confusion.
