bogey
Question
I am somewhat ignorant about golf. If I read in the newspaper that a golf player hit a 揵ogey?did the player do good or bad? Exactly what is a 揵ogey? Thank you. Al Brown
Answer
Al,
Par is the number of strokes that a good golfer needs to complete the hole. If a player shoots par for the 18 hole round, this is considered to be very good. A "bogey" is one stroke over par for the hole. Whether the player did good or bad is a matter of opinion. If you're watching the PGA tour this would be considered bad.
Many average golfers consider a bogey to be a good score.
A birdie is one stroke below par and an eagle is two strokes below par.
Thanks for the question.
