becoming a golf club professional

Question
I am 57 years old, have a bachelors and an MBA degree and have been a VP of Marketing and Sales for several years in the biotech field.
I plan on retiring from the medical business world soon and would like to become a professional golf instructor and perhaps even a club pro or assistant pro.
What do I need to do to begin the process? Will my degrees and extensive work experience count towards any of the requirements?
Sincerely,
Frank

Answer
Hi Frank,

I haven't seen a word about your golfing background. Do you play? What's your handicap? Do you have a fine swing or are you a self made golfer? These are the kind of items that really matter. Competition is fierce among golf pros and outcomers aren't welcome. Your academic and professional background isn't a plus and will be used against you. Some people will try to discredit you asking: if he worked till 57 in biotech what does he know about golf? And prospects will tend to stay in line with them, not with you.

Don't take me wrong. I know what I'm talking about. I am 63, engineer, MBA and made a career in management. After I retired I started writing about breaking putts. No one has ever treated this subject the way I did and I promised not to address putting technique. But I feel that golf pros don't like me and golf players are suspicious. Any laughable tip from a golf pro gets more acceptance than a serious ebook as the one I wrote. Visit my site if you want www.puttinglines.com and have a better idea of what I'm talking about.
