Trying to stay in the golf industry
Question
Hi Michael! I have been in the golf industry since 1996. Not something I originally wanted to do, but fell in love with the sport. I started out "playing the cash piano" as a pro shop attendant. Over the years I became involved with the passion of this sport. With kids in tow, I accomplished my goals. However the economy had a different plan. I have been out of work for 2+ years, always looking to be back into MY plan. I helped easing the hardship of launching a national membership program for my company by creating a Regional position to be a resource to all cluster markets within the company. I have created several golf leagues, tournaments and community efforts including my assistance in bringing the First Tee to Charlotte NC. I took myself one step farther in my own personal growth by be coming NC's first female GM/Supt if not in the country. Unfortunately, my company had to make decisions to consolidate and not renew county leases. I appreciate AGC allowing me to grow as an individual. My question is: How do I get back into the golf world? I have had the pleasure of knowing and assisting so many wonderful individuals such as Charlie Sifford, honoring our golf pioneers, as Jack Nance with the CGA can tell you. HOW do I get back to doing what I love, when the economy doesn't allow for it.
Answer
Denise,
It sounds like you're very ambitious and energetic. Even with the economy the way it is, I would be very optimistic if I were you. Visit all of the courses in your area and ask if there is anything open at that facility. Your resume has to be outstanding and with a good in person presentation a job in this industry will be yours.
Best of luck to you,
Michael Hoffman
