Ideal driver
Question
Before I start.... didn't get a chance to try the putting drill in my last post but have been practicing the short putts and they have been much better lately.
I recently acquired a Taylor Made Burner Draw driver ("HT" loft, 59 deg lie angle, M flex shaft, length at 45" with Winn Excel RF when pulled out of bin). First trip to driving range Monday was with great success (I was hitting them perfectly straight with a moderately low trajectory and a total distance of 250 yards) and this morning I hit some pretty straight drives to the warning track at Miramar.
This almost makes too much sense.
1. I get my best distance by teeing the ball 1 1/2" and hitting a power fade (about 230).
2. I hit a 3 wood just as far as a driver when both are perfectly straight (and I even did that with my persimmon woods a long time ago). I've been playing my best golf lately with a 3 wood as a tee-off club (42 on a 3.1Kyd 9 hole course, +2 on a exec course with 3 missed birdies).
4. In 2008 I went to a more upright swing that corrected pulling my woods and hybrids and also got more consistent with a driver.
5. Recently I went to a fitting station and got more distance with a stiff shaft driver (but with less carry) when both drivers went straight. My only limitation is that my fastest swing speed is 92mph (average is about 85).
Answer
Hey Lou. It sounds like you have your priorities right in that you realize your best scores will come from hitting fairways, even though shots into greens may be a bit longer than you prefer. Keep hunting for that club that delivers more distance but always opt for the short grass.
Fairways and Greens,
John
