drive distance
Question
I am a 66 year old left handed male who has only been playing for about 4 years. I hit a 9 only about 100/125. Also a 6 about the same. My driver only about 150/160. Is this about average or should my driver be longer? I feel I'm lacking a little with my driver. I drive with a TayloMade Burner & TaylorMade LCG irons. Thank You for your input. Dennis
Answer
Hi Dennis,
Hitting your 9 iron 125 yards is very long compared to your Driver. Hitting your 9 iron between 100 and 125 yards is quite unusual, as a 9 iron should only vary about 10 yards, unless your 100 yard 9 iron is a real mis hit.

I would think you could get more distance by using a more lofted driver. The one you're using is probably around 10 or 11 degrees. Golfers with lower swing speeds benefit more from drivers that have 12-14 degrees of loft, as they need a greater launch angle to maximize distance.
Have you had your swing speed measured? You could do so at a golf store where they have a launch monitor. A good launch monitor can give suggestions about loft.
As a preliminary trial, check out my Driver Optimum distance calculator to get an idea of what your swing speed might be.
